A taxi driver ran over a man's leg after the victim was knocked to the ground by a group of young men whilst waiting at a taxi rank.

Detectives investigating the serious assault in Stockton Heath are appealing for members of the public to come forward.

Police sources say a 55-year-old man, from Runcorn, was stood at the taxi rank near to the Red Lion pub on London Road when he was attacked by a group of young men.

He was then left in the road while the group of men got into a taxi.

The driver of the taxi is believed to have run over the victim’s leg before driving away from the scene.

The assault occurred at approximately 12.30am on Sunday 5 December.

The victim was taken to Warrington Hospital by taxi and remains in a serious but stable condition with injuries to his head and leg.

Detective Constable Leah Greenacre, from Warrington CID, said: “The victim sustained serious injuries following the assault and is currently in hospital.

“We are piecing together the circumstances that led to him being attacked and who is responsible.

“I believe numerous people were in the area at the time the assault occurred and may have information. I would encourage you to please contact us if you have not yet spoken to an officer.

“While we are reviewing CCTV I would ask anyone with footage including dash cam to get in touch if it could assist with the investigation.

“I would also appeal to the taxi driver to contact us as well to help with our enquiries.”
