London taxi drivers are being urged to stay alert after reports emerged of a suspected serial fare dodger targeting cabs in the Mayfair area, according to the Licensed Taxi Drivers’ Association (LTDA).
An LTDA spokesperson said in TAXI Newspaper, it has been widely alleged on social media that a 38 year old blonde haired woman has made off without paying several fares, with reported amounts ranging from £7 to £58. The incidents are said to have taken place primarily in and around Mayfair, a hotspot for late night and short distance taxi journeys.
According to the LTDA, the woman’s alleged method involves attempting to pay by card before the transaction is declined. She then leaves the scene without settling the fare. Drivers have been sharing accounts online warning colleagues to be cautious, particularly during busy periods when distractions are more likely.
The spokesperson said police have now become involved in at least one incident. Officers have reportedly been filmed questioning the woman, with the association believing a case is currently being built. Despite this, drivers are being advised not to lower their guard.

In one case, a driver is said to be in possession of several photographs of the woman, including an out of date passport that was allegedly left behind before she disappeared. The LTDA said this material may assist police as enquiries continue.
The association also used the warning to remind drivers of the legal position around unpaid fares. “Despite what the police may tell you, bilking is not a civil offence; it is a criminal act covered by Section 3 of the Theft Act 1978,” the spokesperson said.
The LTDA spokesperson said: “Taxi drivers are being urged to remain vigilant after it emerged that a serial bilker is on the prowl in the Mayfair area.
“It’s been widely alleged on social media that a 38-year-old, blonde-haired woman has hoodwinked several drivers by making off without paying fares ranging from £7 to £58.
“Her modus operandi usually sees her attempt to pay by card, which is then declined, after which she leaves the scene. However, the police have now become involved in at least one incident and have been seen on camera questioning her.
“It is believed that they are currently building a case against her, but drivers still need to be on their guard. One driver is in possession of several photos of her – including an out-of-date passport she left behind before disappearing.
“Despite what the police may tell you, bilking is not a civil off ence; it is a criminal act covered by Section 3 of the Theft Act 1978. Be aware, be vigilant and be safe.”
