Drivers and fleet owners are beginning to see a shift in the used cab market, with a noticeable gap forming between older TX4s and Vitos.
Writing in TAXI Newspaper, the column’s anonymous fleet expert contributor detailed how values are holding firm for both models, but underlying issues are pushing them in different directions.
“For those of you I will deal with in the coming weeks, this is where we are at the moment: older Euro V cabs are averaging between £1,500 and £2,000 per plate, depending on condition and mileage,” they wrote.
That pricing range currently covers both the TX4 and the Mercedes Vito, but trade insiders are beginning to question how long that parity will last. The Vito, despite nearing the end of its typical 15-year licensing lifespan, is benefiting from ongoing demand from airport drivers.
“Vitos are still fetching very good money compared to an equivalent TX4,” said the writer, adding that the bottom section of the market is now the only area where both models sit at similar price points.
One of the key factors affecting TX4 values is said to be parts availability. According to the author, certain components are now increasingly difficult to find, putting pressure on trade values and maintenance costs. “The increasing parts shortages for some bits on a TX4 are beginning to have a serious impact,” the article stated.
Meanwhile, Vito drivers are facing their own set of challenges, particularly with the rear wheel steer system. Parts for that system are now “almost extinct”. The article also offered reflections on the electric TXE, particularly the earlier models, and how they were initially shunned by drivers due to high prices and practicality concerns.
There was, however, some positive news in the report. The columnist pointed out that newer TXEs with low mileage are once again seeing an increase in value as supply tightens. “Looking forward somewhat, this is likely to continue whilst the supply of new cabs is restricted, which makes sense in today’s marketplace.”
Fleet data included in the column showed the current breakdown of licensed cabs, with the total sitting at just over 14,000. The LEVC TXE leads the way with 8,988 vehicles, followed by the TX4 at 3,404 and the Vito at 1,493. The Dynamo and TX2 models make up smaller numbers with 177 and 21 respectively.
