‘TAXI FOR LAMPARD’: London cabbie goes viral after video displaying arrivals board at Chelsea

Updated: Jan 26, 2021

A video of a Spurs supporting London taxi driver has gone viral after displaying a ‘Taxi for Lampard’ arrivals board at the home of Chelsea Football Club.

In footage shared by Steve Hitchen, a London black cab driver drove to the entrance of Chelsea’s Stamford Bridge home asking a club official: “Hi mate, I just got a call to pick someone up. Taxi for Lampard?”

Whilst the cabbie displayed an arrivals board simply saying ‘Taxi for Lampard’, a member of Chelsea’s security team replied to the cabbie: “He’s gone already.”

The London taxi driver, also a fan of rivals Tottenham Hotspur, acted surprised and replied: “I got a phone call from Abramovich and he said to come here, wait, put my meter on, because money’s not an object, just keep the money rolling, and I was going to take Frank Lampard out of here!”

A second Chelsea official then politely asks the cabbie to exit the site.

The footage captured by the cabbie has been viewed over 80,000 times already.

The west London club earlier today sacked manager Frank Lampard after just 18 months in charge at Stamford Bridge.

The 42-year-old leaves with the Blues currently sitting in ninth place in the Premier League after winning just once in their past five league matches.

Lampard’s last game with the club did however put Chelsea in the next round of the FA Cup with a 3-1 home win over Championship side Luton Town.

In a club statement made by Chelsea Football Club, it read: “This has been a very difficult decision, and not one that the owner and the Board have taken lightly.

“We are grateful to Frank for what he has achieved in his time as Head Coach of the Club. However, recent results and performances have not met the Club’s expectations, leaving the Club mid-table without any clear path to sustained improvement.

“There can never be a good time to part ways with a club legend such as Frank, but after lengthy deliberation and consideration it was decided a change is needed now to give the Club time to improve performances and results this season.”

Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich said: “This was a very difficult decision for the Club, not least because I have an excellent personal relationship with Frank and I have the utmost respect for him.

“He is a man of great integrity and has the highest of work ethics. However, under current circumstances we believe it is best to change managers.

“On behalf of everyone at the Club, the Board and personally, I would like to thank Frank for his work as Head Coach and wish him every success in the future. He is an important icon of this great club and his status here remains undiminished. He will always be warmly welcomed back at Stamford Bridge.”

The Club will be making no further comment until such time as a new Head Coach is appointed.
