Taxi rank on Danestrete in Stevenage set to be removed amid town centre development

Stevenage Borough Council has announced plans to remove the taxi rank on Danestrete as part of ongoing regeneration works in the town centre.

The removal is necessary to allow safe pedestrian access during the next phase of construction on the west side of Danestrete. Developers will need to move the hoarding line to the edge of the kerb, which will require the full space currently occupied by the taxi rank.

Further improvement works are also expected to take place on the east side of Danestrete by the owners of the Westgate Centre. To keep pedestrian access open, a temporary walkway will be installed on the western side of the carriageway, leaving no room for the current taxi rank.

The council confirmed that the existing taxi bay on Westgate will remain unchanged during this period.

A public notice has been issued under Section 63 of the Local Government (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 1976. It outlines the full-time rank revocation and invites comments or objections by 11 August 2025.

Plans of the works and the notice itself are available for public inspection at the council offices during opening hours.

The council stated it is open to identifying a suitable alternative location for a taxi rank elsewhere in the town centre as regeneration continues.
