Surrey Police’s RoadSafe team says officers stopped the driver of a taxi in Millbrook, Guildford, after the motorist was seen allegedly using a mobile phone while driving.
According to Surrey RoadSafe, officers then carried out further checks which “revealed the driver was not insured to drive”. Police said the taxi was subsequently seized and the driver has been summoned to appear before the courts.
Surrey RoadSafe said: “SP Casualty Reduction officers stopped the driver of this taxi in Millbrook, Guildford today after they were seen using a mobile phone while driving. Checks also revealed the driver was not insured to drive. The result: Vehicle seized. Driver summoned to court.”
Driving without valid insurance is one of the most serious road traffic offences for licensed taxi and private hire drivers. In addition to criminal proceedings, the incident could also prompt a review by the relevant taxi licensing authority, which has powers to suspend or revoke a driver’s licence where concerns arise over their fitness to hold a licence.
Handheld mobile phone usage whilst driving remains a priority enforcement issue for many police forces across the UK.
For professional drivers, convictions for road traffic offences can carry wider consequences beyond fines and penalty points, potentially affecting their ability to continue working in the licensed trade.
