Teenager seriously injured after electric motocross bike collides with Blackpool taxi following police stop request

A 17-year-old boy has been taken to hospital with serious injuries after the electric motocross bike he was riding collided with a taxi shortly after police requested him to stop in Blackpool.

The collision happened shortly before 2.10pm on Friday 28 August at the crossroads of Tyldesley Road and Rigby Road.

Blackpool Police said officers had requested the rider of a Sur-Ron electric motocross bike to stop on Tyldesley Road. Police said the rider failed to stop for officers.

Moments later, according to police, the Sur-Ron collided with the front of a Toyota Prius taxi at the junction with Rigby Road.

The rider, a 17-year-old boy from Blackpool, was taken to hospital suffering from what police described as “a number of serious injuries”. The taxi driver was not injured in the collision.

Police are now working to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident and have appealed for witnesses, as well as anyone who may hold CCTV, dashcam, doorbell or mobile phone footage from the area.

Lancashire Police has also referred the incident to the Independent Office for Police Conduct because officers had contact with the rider immediately before the collision when they requested that he stop.

Police said: “Because the rider had contact with the police prior to the collision, in that a request was made for him to stop, we have referred ourselves to the IOPC (Independent Office for Police Conduct). This is mandatory in incidents of this nature.”
