TfL licensed taxis and private hire vehicles automatically exempt from Greenwich’s new traffic restrictions

The Royal Borough of Greenwich has confirmed that black cabs and private hire vehicles will remain unaffected by its new traffic management scheme. The initiative, aimed at enhancing air quality and road safety, began an 18-month trial on 27 November.

Under the scheme, part-time weekday restrictions enforced by camera are in place between 7am-10am and 3pm-7pm. These measures limit certain vehicles’ access to specific roads but exempt registered taxis, including black cabs and private hire vehicles, which will not require any additional application for exemption.

Concerns have been raised over road signage clarity since the trial’s launch. In response, the council is reviewing, adjusting, and replacing signage to reduce confusion. To allow time for these updates, a grace period has been extended until 2 January 2025.

The borough has assured residents and businesses that all addresses remain accessible by car, though some journeys may require alternative routes. Blue Badge holders residing in Greenwich can also apply for exemptions, alongside other qualifying individuals and organisations.

Black cab drivers, already exempt from the restrictions, will continue to play a vital role in keeping Greenwich accessible during the trial period.

TfL licensed vehicles such as taxis (Hackney Carriage Licence vehicles) and private hire vehicles do not need to apply for exemption with the council and will be automatically exempt.
