A review into the position, design and allocation of London taxi ranks is underway, but taxi drivers remain uncertain about when they will see any concrete outcomes.
Alex Wilson, London Assembly Member, pressed the Mayor for a timeline. He questioned the Mayor on when the review will conclude and when drivers can expect changes beyond discussions and planning.
In response, Mayor Sadiq Khan stated that the review is already in progress, with more than half of the capital’s taxi ranks assessed so far. He noted that Transport for London (TfL) is leading the work and confirmed the review aims to evaluate the location and layout of ranks, particularly to improve safety, security and access.
The Mayor acknowledged the important role taxis play in areas where public transport is limited or not fully accessible. He pointed out that London now has over 700 taxi ranks, a 40 per cent rise from the 500 available when the last Taxi and Private Hire Action Plan was issued.
While TfL continues to install ranks where they are considered necessary, no specific completion date for the review has been provided. The Mayor confirmed that TfL is working alongside the taxi trade, borough councils and other partners to identify and deliver any required improvements.
Khan said: “Taxis provide an important door to-door service, especially where there are gaps in the public transport network or where the current public transport is inaccessible. There are over 700 taxi ranks in London, up from around 500 when the previous Taxi and Private Hire Action Plan was published – representing a 40 per cent increase. Transport for London (TfL) will continue to appoint new taxi ranks where needed. Â
“The review outlined in the action plan will seek to assess both the location and design of taxi ranks, with a view to, if needed, improving their safety, security and accessibility. The review is already underway, with over half of taxi ranks reviewed. TfL will work closely with the taxi trade, as well as London boroughs, City of London and other stakeholders, to implement changes as it identifies potential improvements.“
