Uber applies cancellation and wait time fees in Birmingham using a structure similar to its London operations, with charges depending on the type of ride selected.
Fees apply if a rider cancels after a short grace period or delays the trip by not being ready at the pickup point. While Birmingham rates are broadly aligned with London, there are some differences in pricing levels.
Each Uber service in Birmingham has a fixed cancellation fee if a trip is cancelled outside the allowed grace period or if the rider fails to appear after the driver has waited.
For most standard options like UberX, UberXL, Uber Pet, Uber Share, UberX Priority, and Wait & Save, the cancellation fee is set at £4.25. Uber Comfort passengers are charged £6.40 for late cancellations. Exec and Exec XXL services carry the highest cancellation fees at £8.25 per trip.
Uber applies a short grace period before wait time charges begin. The length of this grace period varies by service. Most standard rides, including UberX and Share, have a 2-minute grace window. Comfort gives riders 3 minutes, while Exec and Exec XXL offer 5 minutes.
Once this grace period expires, Uber begins charging wait time per minute. For standard services such as UberX, Uber Pet, and Wait & Save, this is £0.30 per minute. Comfort is slightly higher at £0.40. Exec and Exec XXL charge £0.55 per minute, and UberXL costs £0.45.
If a trip includes a stop, Uber applies a separate per-minute wait time fee. These rates mirror the pickup wait fees, with standard options charged £0.30 per minute and Exec/Exec XXL at £0.55. Surge conditions increase stop wait fees for all services, with most rising to £0.33. Exec and Exec XXL increase to £0.61 under surge pricing, while UberXL rises to £0.50. Comfort rises modestly to £0.44.
What riders can do to avoid Uber’s wait time and cancellation charges
Riders can avoid unnecessary charges by cancelling trips within the grace period and being ready at the pickup location. With grace periods as short as two minutes, riders have a limited window to change their minds or get outside to meet their driver. Passengers using premium services like Exec should be especially cautious, as just a few minutes of delay could lead to charges of over £5 in wait time alone.
All applicable fees are displayed in the Uber app during the booking process, and further details can be found in the app’s Help section. Staying informed about the differences between services is key to avoiding additional costs.
