Uber changes driver app to pay sooner for waiting and delayed trips

Uber has changed its driver app in the United States to provide earlier payments for waiting at additional stops and greater visibility over fare adjustments when journeys take longer than expected.
The platform said the updates are intended to compensate drivers for more of the time lost when passengers are late, journeys are changed or traffic delays extend the duration of a booking.
Announcing the changes, Uber said: “We’ve made updates to help you earn more in these moments, and make it clearer when and how you’re getting paid.”
At the initial collection point, drivers can continue to receive wait-time fees when a passenger is not ready. The revised pickup screen displays how long the driver has waited and shows the wait-time or passenger no-show charges that may apply.
Drivers will now begin earning stop-time fees after waiting for one minute at an additional stop following the initial pickup. The previous threshold was two minutes. The app will also show the duration of the wait and the money being earned during it.
The revised multi-stop compensation system is being extended across Uber Black, Uber Green and UberXL, bringing those services into line with other Uber ride categories covered by the arrangement.
Uber is also giving drivers more information when a passenger changes a journey after it has started. If a destination is amended or another stop is added and this affects the price, the driver will see the revised destination and fare change in the app.
Longer-than-expected journeys are addressed through Uber’s Delayed Ride Guarantee. An eligible trip that takes at least five minutes longer than the original estimate between pickup and drop-off can receive an automatic fare increase.
Uber said drivers can earn a larger adjustment when an eligible journey exceeds its estimated duration by more than 15 minutes. Any additional payment is calculated after the trip, without the driver needing to submit a claim.
Trip receipts will provide a breakdown showing what changed, why an adjustment was made and how much additional money the driver received. This could make it easier for private hire drivers to check whether waiting time and delays have been reflected in their final earnings.
However, the announcement was published on Uber’s US website and does not confirm that the same arrangements are available to drivers in the UK. Uber also cautioned that eligibility, payment rates and availability can differ according to location and journey type.
The changes address a persistent operational concern for app-based private hire drivers, who may lose productive time when passengers delay a pickup, remain at an intermediate stop or alter a journey after acceptance.
The financial value will depend on the local rates applied and the proportion of trips that qualify for an adjustment.
