Uber has announced a major expansion of its electric vehicle (EV) programme, including rebranding its Uber Green service to Uber Electric and introducing new grants to support drivers switching to EVs.
The company, which now counts more than 200,000 EV drivers globally, says drivers on its platform are adopting electric vehicles up to five times faster than the average motorist in the US, Canada, and Europe. Around one in four riders report their first-ever EV journey was taken through Uber.
As part of the latest update, Uber Green has been renamed Uber Electric, marking its full transition to an all-electric service in the US. Riders can claim 20% off their next Electric trip, up to a value of $8, using code GOELECTRIC20, valid for one week.
To further accelerate the shift to electric, Uber is introducing new ‘Go Electric’ grants worth $4,000 for drivers who switch to an EV. The scheme applies to both new and used vehicles in New York City, California, Colorado, and Massachusetts. In addition, Uber drivers across the US can receive $1,000 towards an EV purchase made through TrueCar.
Uber is also expanding its battery-aware matching (BAM) technology, which ensures drivers are assigned trips their battery range can comfortably complete. The system will now support EVs from Kia, Hyundai, Ford, Nissan, Volkswagen, and Mercedes-Benz and will be introduced in 25 countries across Europe, Canada, and the US.
The company says these steps will make all-electric trips simpler and more accessible, as part of its wider plan to reduce emissions and encourage industry-wide collaboration in building a sustainable transport network.
