Violent assault at Glasgow City Centre taxi rank leaves victim hospitalised

A brutal assault occurred at a taxi rank in Glasgow city centre early on Sunday morning, leaving a young man hospitalised and detectives searching for witnesses to assist in their investigation. The incident took place in George Square at approximately 3.40am.

According to eyewitnesses, the 23-year-old victim was patiently waiting for a taxi when he was allegedly suddenly struck in the face by another man. The forceful blow caused him to lose his balance and fall to the ground, inflicting further injuries upon him.

The attacker, who is described as around six foot tall with blond hair, was dressed in a green khaki coloured t-shirt and jeans at the time of the assault. After carrying out the assault, he was last seen heading south on John Street towards Cochrane Street.

Emergency services swiftly arrived at the scene and promptly transported the victim to the Glasgow Royal Infirmary for immediate medical attention. Medical staff have classified the individual's condition as stable, but he will remain in hospital as further treatment is required for a head injury sustained during the assault.

Detective constable Mark McCallum, from Police Scotland Stewart Street CID, said: “This was an unprovoked attack which left the victim requiring hospital treatment and it is vital we trace the person responsible.

“There will have been people in George Square making their way home from nights out around the time of the incident, as well as taxis at the rank, and I would urge anyone who witnessed what happened to please get in touch. “I would also ask anyone motorists with dash-cams who were in the area in the early hours of Sunday morning to check their footage in case they have captured anything which could assist with the investigation. “Anyone with information can contact Police Scotland via 101, quoting incident number 0779 of Sunday, September 10, 2023. Alternatively you can call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
