Licensing officers from City of Wolverhampton Council joined West Midlands Police for an evening enforcement operation at Birmingham Airport on Friday, targeting private hire vehicles as part of National Tyre Safety Month.
The joint operation took place across the airport’s drop-off area and Cargo Terminal Car Park. Officers carried out spot checks on licensed vehicles to ensure they met legal standards, with a particular focus on tyre condition, tread depth and overall roadworthiness.
A City of Wolverhampton Council Public Protection spokesperson said the checks were part of wider work to protect both drivers and passengers. “Licensing Compliance were out last night with West Midlands Police at Birmingham Airport’s drop-off area and Cargo Terminal Car Park, checking private hire vehicles as part of National Tyre Safety Month. Keeping passengers and drivers safe,” they said.
National Tyre Safety Month is an annual campaign that runs throughout October. It aims to raise awareness about the importance of regular tyre checks, reminding motorists that poorly maintained tyres can lead to reduced grip, longer braking distances and an increased risk of accidents.
The campaign encourages all drivers to inspect their tyres for correct pressure, tread depth and visible damage, highlighting that simple maintenance can make a significant difference to road safety.
