A popular group of Canadian YouTubers have raised more than £122,000 to help a London taxi driver clear long-standing debt linked to a loan taken out over 20 years ago.
Yes Theory, who have built a subscriber base of more than nine million since launching in 2015, recently revisited 71-year-old Reg, a cabbie who featured in one of their most popular videos.
The original video, which has drawn close to nine million views, saw the group travel over 3,000km across Europe in Reg’s taxi until the fare reached $10,000. The collaboration introduced Reg to a global audience and built a strong connection with the YouTube creators.
When Yes Theory met up with him again, Reg shared that he had taken out a £70,000 loan in 2004 to support his mother. Despite having already repaid £90,000, high interest rates meant he still owed a further £113,000.
In response, Yes Theory launched a GoFundMe appeal on Sunday. By midweek, donations had already surpassed the initial target, reaching over £122,000. The channel has since increased the goal to £150,000 to offer Reg additional financial relief and the chance to ease back from working every day of the week.
Yes Theory said in an update: “We succeeded! Reg is free! His debt of £113,000 is fundraised for. Thank you to all of you who made this dream come true.
“We have now increased the goal to £150,000 to give Reg further breathing room in his life and hopefully avoid working 7 days-week. For those of you who still want to support him, he will appreciate it beyond words will be able to describe.“
A new video documenting the fundraiser and Reg’s story is expected to be released this Sunday.
