TfL announce taxis to retain access to Tooley Street after consultation

Transport for London (TfL) have announced in a statement made earlier today, that taxis will retain access to Tooley Street via London Bridge.

The proposed exclusion for taxis turning left into Tooley Street from London Bridge led to representatives from across the taxi industry, including the LTDA and LCDC, entering into extensive dialogue with TfL. The proposal also led to a series of protests being called by taxi pressure group the ITA.

TfL said the proposed changes, which will go ahead as part of the Tooley Street project, will see the introduction of a 20mph speed limit along the entire length of Duke Street Hill and Tooley Street, between Borough High Street and Tower Bridge Road.

Other changes will include the introduction of a two-metre wide mandatory cycle lane westbound, on Duke Street Hill and Tooley Street, running between Borough High Street and Bermondsey Street junctions. The cycle lane will be separated from traffic with wands on the Duke Street Hill section.

There will also be a protected right turn ‘pocket’ for cyclists waiting to turn right into Bermondsey Street from Tooley Street.

Duke Street Hill will become no entry, apart from cyclists, buses and taxis, from the junction with Borough High Street, meaning that eastbound traffic along Duke Street Hill and Tooley Street as far as the junction with Bermondsey Street will be restricted to buses, cycles and taxis only.

Finally there will be restrictions on access from side roads onto Tooley Street to westbound travel only. Any motorised vehicle turning onto Tooley Street from the following roads will not be able to turn onto and travel eastbound towards Bermondsey Street.

  • Tooley Street onto Duke Hill Street

  • Bridge Yard onto Tooley Street

  • Cottons Lane onto Tooley Street

  • Hay’s Lane onto Tooley Street

  • Battlebridge Lane onto Tooley Street
