United Private Hire Drivers union says TfL is not up to the job of regulating Uber who run rings aro

The United Private Hire Drivers union (UPHD) have said that Transport for London needs a complete management overhaul.

The union, who has relentlessly pushed for better workers rights in the ride-sharing gig-economy, has taken to social media to criticise the industry's London regulator who they say is "way out of it's depth" when trying to reign in Silicon Valley giants. 

In a tweet, the union said: "Uber is digital & TfLTPH is 1970s era analog & way out of depth. TfL is set up to regulate individual taxi & PH drivers & clownish operators associated with the LPHCA.

"TfL is simply not up to the job of regulating Uber who run rings around them. Needs a complete management overhaul." 

The attack on the capital's taxi and private hire regulator comes just days after they granted Uber a two month licence extension - a decision which has left many flabbergasted.

The new two-month licence will have the same conditions that ULL has been subject to over the last 15 months, along with new conditions to ensure passenger safety.

These new conditions cover ride sharing, appropriate insurance and driver document checks by Uber. Speaking in relation to the two month licence, a TfL spokesperson said: “Uber London Limited has been granted a two-month private hire operator licence to allow for scrutiny of additional information that we are requesting ahead of consideration of any potential further licensing application.”
