Private hire drivers with the Independent Workers’ Union of Great Britain (IWGB) gathered outside Uber’s London headquarters on Thursday to protest over claims of falling pay and worsening conditions.
Protesters held signs reading “Uber profits soar. Drivers stay poor” and “Drive alone - fight together” as they delivered speeches and spoke with fellow drivers about the impact of reduced earnings. The action aimed to draw attention to the ongoing concerns around income insecurity and working conditions in the private hire sector.
Union representatives described the event as part of a growing movement among drivers to challenge what they call an “exploitative” business model. They say rising costs and stagnant pay are making it harder for drivers to earn a basic living.
Nader Awaad, Chair of the IWGB Private Hire Drivers branch, said the protest sends a message that drivers are not willing to remain silent.
Awaad said: “Uber expects drivers to lie down and take hit after hit without ever fighting back. Yesterday, when we showed them that we do have the energy, the unity, and the determination to stand up for ourselves, they ran away scared.
“The IWGB is growing every day as more and more drivers decide to stop taking punches and start doing something - to protect themselves, their families, and all other drivers suffering. Together, we are building something powerful. We encourage all drivers to join the union and be part of this movement for change.”
