Legal advice could prompt clamp down on unlicensed minicab operators working in City of York

City of York Council have taken legal advice which could prompt a possible clamp down on unlicensed private hire operators working within the authority’s boundaries.
The legal advice centres around ride-hailing firm Uber who lost their operator's licence in York back in 2017. The minicab firm have however continued to operate in York using neighbouring operator licences.
Depending on the legal advice provided to both City of York Council and North Yorkshire Police, drivers working on the digital platform may be asked to leave the area when looking for work.
Matt Boxall, Head of Public Protection at City of York Council, said: “The council has taken legal advice on this matter, which has been reported to the licensing committee and the Executive. We are awaiting to see what the police legal advice says. We are keen that all taxi drivers in York are complying with their legal obligations.”
A North Yorkshire Police spokesman said: “North Yorkshire Police is working with City of York Council on this matter, as taxi licensing and licensing enforcement sits with local authorities rather than the police.
“As part of our work to support the City of York Council and our local communities, our officers will engage with Uber drivers if they are seen in the city. Any breaches will then be dealt with appropriately.”
