LEVC has announced plans to cut output at its Ansty manufacturing site near Coventry in a move designed to make the company more efficient and secure the future of the London black cab.
The decision will reduce the number of staff involved in TX taxi production by around 180 as part of a wider restructure of operations. The company said there will be no disruption to customer service, sales or support.
LEVC’s leadership said the move reflects ongoing difficulties in the UK taxi market. The demand for new electric taxis has dropped, affected by rising operating costs and a continued decline in driver numbers both in London and across the UK.
Policy changes at the local level are also having an impact. These include relaxed emissions rules, extended age limits for taxis and inconsistent licensing enforcement. Cross-border private hire activity is adding further strain to licensed operators. Despite these challenges, LEVC says it remains in contact with government bodies to push for reforms that support the trade.
Since its launch in 2018, the TX electric taxi has made up over 60% of London’s cab fleet, with around 9,000 vehicles on the capital’s streets. Globally, more than 11,000 TX vehicles have been sold, with a combined mileage exceeding 1 billion miles.
LEVC says it is committed to the development of the next-generation black cab and views the current action as part of a strategy to ensure long-term sustainability and future investment. The firm continues to work with regulators on the roadmap for its next product offering.
LEVC’s CEO, Alex Nan, acknowledged the achievements of the TX model and confirmed that the company remains committed to Ansty as its base. He said further details on the firm’s new strategic direction will be shared soon.
Nan said: “Since its launch seven years ago, the TX has achieved many impressive milestones. With over 11,000 units sold worldwide, the fleet has collectively driven more than 1 billion miles—equivalent to circling the Earth over 40,000 times.
“In turn, this has reduced the amount of CO2 from entering the atmosphere through driven exhaust emissions by around 300,000,000 kgs, demonstrating the real-world impact of LEVC’s zero-exhaust-emission capable ‘eCity’ technology. We are exceptionally proud of our world-class products, our home in Ansty and our employees.
“However, with the UK taxi market continuing to experience significant challenges, LEVC has reluctantly made the decision to reduce its TX manufacturing output, resulting in a round of compulsory redundancies. LEVC will of course provide full support for its customers as normal and there is no impact on the sales or aftersales of new or used TX.
“LEVC firmly believes in the future of the UK taxi industry and we remain committed to our vision of being a leading provider of green mobility solutions. Despite the temporary challenges the taxi sector is facing, we are dedicated to safeguarding the iconic London black cab and are actively discussing with regulators the requirements to support the development of an all-new TX.
“In the short term, we unfortunately have to make some difficult decisions in order to ready LEVC for resilient, sustainable profitability and long-term growth.
"Ansty will always be the home of the iconic London taxi and we will announce further details on LEVC’s new strategic vision very soon.”
