London taxi groups UTAG and LTDA serve challenge against Camden’s Tottenham Court Road exclusions

Two London taxi driver groups, the Licensed Taxi Drivers’ Association (LTDA) and United Trade Action Group (UTAG), have jointly served legal papers challenging Camden Council’s exclusion of taxis on Tottenham Court Road.

On Sunday 28 February Camden’s Gower Street and Bloomsbury Street turned two way between Grafton Way and High Holborn.

A day later on Monday 1 March the new traffic restrictions put in place on Tottenham Court Road also became active. Areas will be restricted to buses and cyclists only Monday – Saturday 8am-7pm.

A spokesperson from the LTDA said via social media: “Together with our colleagues at UTAG we have today served papers on London Borough of Camden to start the process of challenging the exclusion of Taxis from Tottenham Court Road.”

A spokesperson for UTAG said via social media: “UTAG/LTDA have today served our claim on the London Borough of Camden against their decision to exclude taxis from TCR.”

Cabvision, a taxi card payment systems, meters, and taxi rentals firm, shared images of the legal papers, saying: “Today UTAG along with the LTDA have issued a challenge against the 'unlawful' road changes implemented by Camden.

“Bishopsgate 2.0”

The latest action follows the result of a landmark High Court ruling in January which found the Mayor of London and Transport for London (TfL) to have “acted unlawfully” in their treatment of licensed taxis, in the Streetspace for London Plan and associated Guidance and the A10 Bishopsgate Traffic Order.

This week TfL were granted the right to appeal against the High Court judgment.
