Taxi drivers in Oxfordshire were issued a total of 110 local authority penalty points during a joint enforcement operation led by Thames Valley Police Roads Policing officers and licensing teams from South Oxfordshire and Vale of the White Horse.
In a statement posted by TVP Roads Policing, officers confirmed they had been working alongside South Oxfordshire & Vale of the White Horse Licencing, targeting taxi drivers. Vehicles were stopped and examined for roadworthiness and adherence to licensing conditions.
According to the post, “Vehicles were checked for roadworthiness and compliance with their licencing conditions. Over the course of the evening 110 local authority penalty points were issued.”
The operation formed part of ongoing compliance activity focused on licensed hackney carriage and private hire vehicles operating within the two district council areas. Local authority penalty points are typically applied for breaches of licensing conditions and can contribute towards suspension or revocation of a driver or vehicle licence if thresholds are reached.
Roads policing officers and licensing teams carried out targeted compliance checks on taxi vehicles across South Oxfordshire and Vale of the White Horse.
While police did not provide a breakdown of the specific offences detected, such roadside checks commonly cover tyre condition, vehicle defects, insurance, identification plates, and driver documentation. Licensing authorities have powers to enforce local standards set under the Local Government (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 1976.
For operators and drivers, the scale of penalty points issued in a single evening is likely to draw attention, particularly in areas where councils operate cumulative penalty schemes. Repeated infringements can have licensing implications cabbies.
Joint operations between police and licensing teams have become a routine feature in many areas as councils seek to demonstrate active oversight of the taxi and private hire sector. Such enforcement drives are often scheduled during evening hours when vehicle activity is higher.
