Wayve autonomous vehicles handed private hire operators licence by TfL ahead of London Uber trial launch

Transport for London (TfL) has granted Private Hire Vehicle licences to a number of Wayve’s autonomous all-electric Ford Mustang Mach-E vehicles, marking a significant regulatory milestone ahead of the launch of autonomous passenger trips on the Uber platform in London.
The move completes what the companies describe as the required “triple-lock” for private hire operations in the capital, with the operator, driver and vehicle all licensed by the same licensing authority. The licences allow the vehicles to operate under the Government’s Automated Vehicle Trialling Code of Practice using Uber’s existing TfL Private Hire Operator licence.
Although the vehicles are designed to drive autonomously using Wayve’s AI Driver system, each journey during the trial phase will still include a trained and TfL-licensed private hire driver onboard. That driver will supervise the journey, provide assistance where required and can take over control of the vehicle if necessary.
Before receiving licences, the all-electric Ford Mustang Mach-E vehicles, equipped with Wayve’s AI Driver technology alongside surround cameras and radar systems, were inspected to ensure they met TfL’s vehicle policy and safety standards.
The development represents another step in the UK’s gradual introduction of autonomous vehicle technology within regulated passenger transport. Unlike conventional private hire vehicles, these trial vehicles will continue operating under existing licensing arrangements while autonomous systems are evaluated under the Government’s trialling framework.
Wayve says public interest has been strong ahead of the launch. According to the company, more than 100,000 Londoners have joined Uber’s Interest List during the past eight weeks for the opportunity to experience an autonomous journey. Selected riders will be invited to take part in pilot trips later this summer, with passenger feedback expected to help shape the wider rollout ahead of a full public launch.

Wayve has been developing and testing its autonomous driving technology on London’s roads since 2018. The company says its AI-first approach differs from many traditional autonomous driving systems by learning from real-world driving experience rather than relying primarily on high-definition maps, hand-coded rules or fixed geofenced operating areas. It says the technology has since been tested across more than 500 cities worldwide.
For London’s taxi and private hire sector, the licensing decision represents one of the most significant developments in autonomous mobility to date. While the presence of licensed safety drivers means the service remains closely supervised, the trials are expected to provide regulators and operators with valuable operational data as the Government continues work on the future deployment of self-driving passenger services in the UK.
