Research shows Uber and Lyft journey cost and wait time convenience outweighs greener car option

Uber and Lyft have been pushing towards greener urban transportation, expanding their fleets to include more eco-friendly vehicles, but it’s cost and convenience that wins out according to recent research.

Despite the near-parity in wait times and prices between green and standard rides, consumers are still hesitant to make the switch to zero-emission cars. The data shows that even a one-minute longer wait or a $1 higher fare can deter riders from choosing the greener option. This suggests that while there is an interest in sustainability, convenience and cost remain paramount in the decision-making process.

Interestingly, the report reveals that 37% of consumers believe green rides should be cheaper than their standard counterparts. This perception could be rooted in the idea that adopting green technology should lead to financial incentives for the end user. Yet, the reality is that the costs of maintaining and operating electric or hybrid vehicles often translate into comparable, if not higher, fare prices.

The adoption of green rides varies significantly across global cities. The report suggests that in New York, only 10% of rides are green. This contrasts sharply with European cities like Paris and London, where over 20% of rides are eco-friendly. The disparity can largely be attributed to differing regulatory environments.

European cities have enforced stricter regulations that mandate a higher number of green vehicles on the road, pushing ridehail companies to adapt quickly. In contrast, cities like New York have been slower to impose such mandates, resulting in fewer green rides available to consumers.

The Obi Global Rideshare Report 2024 offers a comprehensive overview of the current state of the rideshare industry, post-pandemic. It combines proprietary data with public sources to analyse trends such as driver pay, pricing dynamics, competition among service providers, and, crucially, the growth of green rides. The report paints an interesting picture of an industry in flux, where sustainability initiatives are gaining traction but still face significant challenges.
