Private hire vehicle drivers in Stoke-on-Trent face immediate suspension if they fail to display required door signage under a new enforcement campaign launching next week.
Stoke-on-Trent City Council will begin “Operation Blitz” on Monday 13 April, targeting private hire vehicles operating without mandatory door signs. The authority said there has been a “significant increase” in non-compliance, with enforcement officers identifying around three vehicles per day without the required markings.
Under the council’s policy, private hire vehicles must display permanently attached door signs showing the operator’s name, telephone number and the words “private hire”. Drivers found in breach of the rules will be immediately suspended, with offences recorded against their licence.
A council spokesperson said the requirement is not new and was reaffirmed in the latest taxi policy introduced on 1 September 2025 following consultation. “Our taxi policy has always required door signs to be permanently attached to private hire vehicles at all times,” the spokesperson said.

They added that clear signage plays a role in passenger safety, particularly for vulnerable groups. “Door signs make it easier for people to recognise the correct taxi that they have booked particularly vulnerable, disabled and elderly customers – and fit into our wider commitment to safety.”
The council also noted inconsistencies with neighbouring licensing authorities, some of which do not mandate permanent signage, prompting the need for clearer local enforcement. The new campaign is intended to ensure Stoke-on-Trent’s fleet meets its specific regulatory standards.
