London cab drivers once again gave their time to support the Taxi Charity for Military Veterans on 1 July, as 50 black cabs transported 90 veterans to Worthing for the charity’s annual seaside outing.
The event, running since 1948, started at South Holmwood village in Surrey, where local residents offered sandwiches, cakes and refreshments. The veterans, many of whom are regular attendees, were warmly sent off by the community before heading south in convoy.
In Worthing, the taxis were met by the Town Crier and the town’s Mayor, Councillor Cathy Glynn-Davis. Veterans and supporters gathered at the Pavilion Theatre for a fish and chip lunch, attended by 240 guests in total.
Councillor Glynn-Davis thanked the taxi drivers for their ongoing commitment. The charity’s chairman, Colin Mills, spoke about the organisation’s evolving role as the number of WWII veterans declines. He reaffirmed the charity’s aim to support ex-service personnel from all service eras.
Live music from performers Annie Riley, Lloyd Ellery and Jason Allen brought a festive mood to the theatre, with dancing and conga lines creating a cheerful afternoon for all involved. Even the catering team joined in the celebrations.
The day concluded with a return stop in South Holmwood for tea and cake before veterans were taken back home by their drivers.

Colin Mills, London cab driver and Chairman of the Taxi Charity for Military Veterans, said: "This trip is at the very heart of our charity’s history. Since 1948, we’ve been bringing veterans to Worthing for a day of friendship and celebration. The incredible support from South Holmwood, Worthing Borough Council, and of course, our volunteer drivers, makes this event so special. It’s a wonderful reminder of the power of community and the bond between veterans and cab drivers. We’re already looking forward to next year’s trip."
