Taxi driver’s windscreen smashed after alleged road rage attack involving cyclist in Oxford

Thames Valley Police has launched an appeal for witnesses following an alleged assault and criminal damage incident in Oxford that left a taxi driver injured and his vehicle badly damaged.
The incident happened at around 12.35pm on Friday 3 July 2026 after the taxi driver had dropped off a passenger and was travelling along Banbury Road. According to police, the driver encountered two cyclists riding side-by-side in the bus lane before overtaking them.
When the driver stopped at traffic lights near the junction with Moreton Road, one of the cyclists challenged him over the manner of the overtake before allegedly striking the taxi’s wing mirror.
Police said the driver then turned onto Moreton Road before rejoining Woodstock Road, where he became stationary in traffic near St Edward’s School. It is alleged that one of the cyclists then approached the vehicle aggressively and launched a sustained attack on the taxi.
Investigators say the cyclist repeatedly struck the vehicle, smashed the windscreen, damaged both wing mirrors and removed a mobile phone holder from inside the taxi before throwing it to the ground and breaking it.
The cyclist also allegedly attempted to strike the driver, a man in his seventies, through an open window. The victim suffered pain to his arm while trying to block the blow, police said.
The suspect is described as a man aged between 30 and 50 years old, with no facial hair and either bald or with very short hair. He was wearing distinctive full military camouflage clothing, including a long jacket and trousers, and was riding a mid-blue mountain bike.
Case investigator Nathan Dewey said: “I am appealing to anybody who witnessed this incident, or who has information that may assist our investigation, to please get in touch.
“This happened in the middle of the day on a busy road and I believe there may be people who saw what took place or who may have dash-cam footage of the incident.”
