Uber passengers in the UK can now pay for trips using cash, in a move aimed at giving riders more choice when booking journeys.
The new feature allows riders to select cash as their payment method directly in the Uber app. At the end of a trip, the driver confirms the fare, and the rider pays in cash. A receipt is sent to the rider by email once the trip is completed.
Uber recommends riders review fare estimates for the different vehicle options before requesting a cash trip, to ensure they have enough money to pay. Fares for trips starting and ending in different cities are based on the pricing of the city of origin.
If a rider does not have enough cash, they can switch to a different payment method before the journey starts. Riders also have the option to add a card or other payment method via the app.
In cases where the rider overpays and the driver does not have the correct change, the driver can enter the amount received in the app. Uber will then issue the rider change in the form of credits, if the rider agrees.
Cancellation fees are also covered under the cash system. If a trip is cancelled and a fee is applied, this fee will be added to the fare of the rider’s next trip. The driver receives the combined fare, and the rider is issued two separate receipts.
For drivers, accepting cash is optional. They can opt in or out of the feature through the app. If a rider underpays or does not pay at all, the driver can report this in the app. Uber will cover the outstanding fare and recover the amount from the rider later.
Drivers are also able to issue change in credits if they do not have the correct amount in cash. If too much cash is collected, Uber will adjust the driver’s account balance to reflect the difference.
