Uber has confirmed the official launch of its services in Pendle. The app-based operator went live on Thursday following a delay for local drivers and users.
Earlier this month, Uber began onboarding drivers at Lomeshaye Business Park in Nelson, targeting recruitment in both Pendle and Blackburn with Darwen. The move came after some delays that affected drivers in the Blackburn with Darwen area.
Uber said hundreds of drivers from the local area were expected to sign up and begin operating through the platform.
According to Lancashire Telegraph, an Uber spokesperson said: “We are delighted to have now launched in Pendle to provide new earning opportunities for local drivers, give passengers greater transport options and support the local Lancashire economy.
“All Uber drivers have access to industry-leading worker rights, as well as formal representation through GMB Union.
“Uber’s industry-leading safety features will give passengers the ability to book safe trips to where they want to go.”
The launch in Pendle follows recent rollouts in several other areas across the UK. The company has continued to grow into towns where private hire coverage has traditionally been more limited and demand for its services high.
The expansion is seen as part of Uber’s wider strategy to extend its presence in smaller towns and rural areas, beyond its core operations in major cities.
