Vertu Motors plc has acquired Edinburgh-based Union Motor Company, bolstering its presence in the taxi industry and expanding its reach in the electric vehicle market.
Union Motor Company is an Authorised London Electric Vehicle Company (LEVC) repairer and has been a key player in Scotland’s taxi servicing sector for 25 years. The acquisition supports Vertu’s strategy to grow its footprint in the servicing and support of hybrid and electric taxis.
The move comes as demand rises for low-emission vehicles, driven by the Scottish Government’s plans to implement low emission zones in major cities. Taxi drivers across the country are being encouraged to upgrade to greener vehicles, particularly the LEVC TX – a modern take on the traditional black cab that combines petrol and electric power.
Following the acquisition, Union Motor Company will continue to operate from its current Edinburgh location. The existing team will remain in place, with founder Danny Flynn stepping into a new position as LEVC Aftersales Manager for Scotland. Claire Newlands will remain General Manager, overseeing daily operations.
This acquisition allows Vertu to align itself with key trends in the taxi sector and provide stronger aftersales support for the growing number of electric taxi operators in Scotland.
Gregor Mackie, Vertu, said: “The acquisition of Union Motor Company represents a significant step in our strategy to expand LEVC service coverage. We are committed to supporting the evolving needs of taxi drivers across Scotland and ensuring our aftersales service meets the highest standards.”
Robert Forrester, Chief Executive of Vertu Motors plc, said: “This acquisition aligns with our long-term growth strategy and reinforces our commitment to the taxi sector.
"Danny has developed an excellent business, and we are proud to welcome him and his team to the Group. With the strength of our network of almost 200 dealerships and our proven systems, we are confident we can enhance Union’s service offering whilst supporting the industry’s transition to cleaner, low-emission vehicles.”
