A London taxi expert has set out the key factors that define the value of a cab, based on years of experience in the trade. Writing in TAXI Newspaper, the expert shared the most common question asked by cab drivers: what makes a taxi more or less valuable?
According to the expert, the first factor is an obvious one; age. A newer vehicle will generally hold more value than an older one. However, even among cabs registered just days apart, the registration plate can make a difference. A 19 plate will often fetch a higher price than a 68 plate, despite both being registered in early 2019. Buyers, just like with private cars, prefer the newest plate available.
Mileage also plays a critical role. London taxis are expected to clock up higher mileage than standard cars, but lower mileage still holds a premium. The definition of ‘average’ mileage varies, but it typically sits somewhere between 18,000 and 25,000 miles per year.
Condition is another major consideration. Buyers pay close attention to bodywork, interior trim, seat wear and tear, and overall cleanliness. Scratched rear trim is common, but can often be tidied up with simple techniques found online. A cab with a solid service record, healthy tyres and a clean MOT history will always attract more interest.
Buyers are also advised to check the vehicle over carefully in person. Panel gaps, body alignment and general appearance can reveal a lot. The expert also has one key rule: never buy a cab in the dark or rain.
These insights offer a useful persepective for cab drivers looking to sell or buy a vehicle. Attention to detail and a good knowledge of the vehicle’s condition and history remain vital.
The London taxi expert wrote in TAXI Newspaper: “There are a thousand other bits and bobs, but a vehicle will talk to you if you listen to it. Stand and look at it. Ask yourself if it looks right. Is everything straight, including door panel gaps?
“My golden rule is to never buy a cab in the dark or rain!”
