Driveless pods now operational and using cycle lanes in Greenwich
They're here! Driverless pods are now operational, and they are using the cycle lane along Olympian Way on the Greenwich Peninsular.
The GATEway Project is a shuttle trial that will see vehicles driven by a system called Cavstar, incredibly they need no road infrastructure. All of the sensors that are required for the vehicle to function are carried onboard with monitoring carried out via the 4G network.
The vehicles are to be able to cope with a plethora of obstacles, such as dogs, cyclists, terrain changes as well pedestrians, the pod itself can be programmed to come to a halt as far as 20 feet short of any pedestrians that it may encounter and can travel at around 10 mph.
This now begs the question, will the cycle superhighway be next for these pods?
