City Cabs Edinburgh has launched access to London taxis through its passenger app, marking a significant expansion of the Scottish operator’s digital footprint into the capital.
The move, branded as City Cabs London, allows customers using the City Cabs App in London to book into a network of more than 10,000 licensed London taxis via its existing relationship with Gett.
The firm said the average pickup time in the capital is under four minutes, with journeys booked and managed entirely within the City Cabs App at standard London taxi meter rates.
Passengers will not be redirected to or required to download or use the Gett platform. All bookings remain within the City Cabs ecosystem, a decision the company said is aimed at keeping customers engaged with its own brand when travelling beyond Edinburgh.
Edinburgh operator expands app coverage to more than 10,000 London black cabs as part of wider UK and European growth plan
The expansion forms part of a broader strategy to increase customer demand and maintain utilisation across its Edinburgh fleet. City Cabs said the initiative is not expected to generate significant direct revenue in the early stages, but is designed to strengthen brand loyalty and grow its customer base by offering national and international coverage.
The company also confirmed that integrations with Gett and Cab9’s Instant Workshare function will be used to widen UK coverage in the coming months. In cities with established black cab fleets, bookings will be routed through approved black cab providers via Gett. In smaller towns, City Cabs will connect with licensed taxi and mixed fleets through Cab9. The operator said all partners are vetted to ensure service standards are maintained.
Beyond the UK, City Cabs said it already has active partnerships in Paris and Helsinki, with further European cities in development. Customers will continue to pay in pounds sterling through the City Cabs App, while drivers in partner cities will be paid in their local currency.
The agreements operate on a reciprocal basis. City Cabs confirmed it is already receiving a “sizeable number” of bookings from other Cab9 companies and Gett, where passengers book through external systems and jobs are dispatched to City Cabs drivers in Edinburgh. For these bookings, drivers receive the full fare, with City Cabs managing processing fees.
The development reflects a growing trend among traditional taxi operators to collaborate through technology partnerships in order to compete with multinational ride-hailing platforms on coverage and convenience, while retaining local control over pricing structures and fleet standards.
