Taxi-hailing platform Flywheel has joined forces with AI mobility firm Nexar to install connected dash cameras in thousands of taxis across the United States.
The rollout will bring Nexar’s AI-driven safety tools to Flywheel-enabled vehicles, offering real-time data capture and analytics. These systems will provide features such as crash detection, driver behaviour monitoring, and in-vehicle safety alerts.
According to Nexar’s CEO, Zach Greenberger, the move represents a step towards smarter, safer taxis that also support better insurance management for fleets. He said the technology will turn taxis into intelligent vehicles, offering tools previously only used by larger rideshare operators.
Flywheel taxis currently operate in several major cities, giving passengers access to app-based hailing, digital payments, and fleet-managed services. The partnership with Nexar will now introduce real-time telematics and analytics to the platform’s offering.
Flywheel CEO Izzy Aala said the initiative is designed to maintain the competitiveness of the taxi sector. He added that the integration gives taxi drivers technology that rivals or outperforms what rideshare companies use.
Both companies are aiming to strengthen taxi fleets through improved safety, lower operating costs, and enhanced service standards.
"This alliance is about more than just cameras in taxis," said Zach Greenberger. "Together with Flywheel, we're equipping an iconic mode of transportation with next-generation technology. This is a leap forward in making taxis not only safer and smarter, but also contributors to a larger vision of better managed insurance costs for drivers and fleets."
"Flywheel is committed to ensuring taxis remain competitive, relevant, and innovative," said Izzy Aala. "With Nexar's technology, we're providing taxi drivers with tools that rival—and often surpass—those used by rideshare fleets. We're proud to roll this out nationwide as part of our mission to strengthen the industry."
