London’s black cab drivers once again showed their strong sense of service and community by successfully delivering the annual London Taxi Drivers’ Charity for Children (LTCFC) trip to Hertfordshire Zoo.
A convoy of 65 licensed taxi drivers transported more than 200 children with special needs, along with their families, from the Isle of Dogs to the zoo in a tightly coordinated operation. All drivers gave up their time voluntarily and ensured a smooth and safe journey throughout.
The outing offered a clear example of the trade’s longstanding charitable commitment and professionalism. All participating drivers hold enhanced DBS checks and are TfL licensed. Many of them have supported the charity for decades.
Tony Moore, LTCFC Chairman, said: “This is what our trade is really about. Sixty-five professional drivers, all volunteers, working together like clockwork to bring joy to children who need it most. It's the kind of coordination that only comes from decades of experience on London's streets."
All taxis were wheelchair-accessible, fuel costs were covered, and each family received food, drinks and goodie bags. Each child was also given a soft Louie toy, adding a small personal touch to the day.
Driver liaison John highlighted the consistent dedication among the volunteers: “The response from our drivers is always incredible. These are busy professionals who could be earning, but they choose to give their time because they understand the difference we make to these families.”
Now in its 97th year, LTCFC has been running such events since 1928. The group serves over 1,500 children every year, focusing on those with autism and special needs. Every event is funded through donations and volunteer support.
With the centenary approaching in 2028, LTCFC is planning commemorative events while also encouraging more drivers to join the network as some long-serving volunteers prepare to step back.
