Octopus Energy has partnered with Uber to make electric vehicle (EV) ownership more affordable for private hire drivers. The deal offers a free home charger worth £900 to the first 1,000 drivers switching to Octopus’ EV tariff, Intelligent Octopus Go.
The move is aimed at supporting Uber’s wider plan to transition its London fleet to fully electric vehicles. Currently, around 40% of all Uber miles driven in the capital are electric. Drivers using the new tariff could save over £700 annually on fuel when compared to petrol or diesel cars. Even those already driving electric could save over £400 when switching from a standard variable tariff.
The tariff uses smart charging technology to power up vehicles during cheaper, greener periods overnight. In addition to the free charger, drivers also benefit from an 8% discount on public charging through the Octopus Electroverse network, which includes more than 36,000 charge points across the UK.
Uber drivers are adopting EVs at five times the rate of the general public, according to the company. The new partnership is expected to reduce running costs while also helping improve air quality in urban areas.
Rebecca Dibb-Simkin, Chief Product and Marketing Officer at Octopus Energy, said: "Uber drivers spend more time in their cars than anyone else, so no one knows better what's good to drive and cheaper to run.
“With over a third of Uber drivers already feeling the benefits of EVs, we’re making it even easier for more drivers to go electric. By offering a smart charging tech bundle that does the hard work for them, Uber drivers can get real savings, and offer customers a smoother ride and next level service.”
Andrew Brem, General Manager of Uber UK, said: “Uber drivers are leading the way in switching to EVs, embracing cleaner vehicles much faster than the general public. But one of the biggest barriers they continue to face is access to affordable and reliable charging.“This partnership with Octopus helps tackle that, making it easier for more drivers to go electric across the UK.”
