Uber introduces ‘senior accounts’ to help UK families book rides for elderly relatives

Uber has launched a new feature in the UK that allows people to book and manage rides for their elderly relatives.

The new “senior accounts” are part of an effort to make the ride-hailing app more accessible to older users. The simplified version of the app includes larger text, clearer buttons, fewer screens and a more direct booking process.

Family members or caregivers can use Uber’s existing “family profiles” to invite an older adult to join. Once set up, they can arrange trips on their behalf, track journeys live and contact the driver or Uber’s safety support line if needed.

Users booking for someone else will also be able to view the name of the driver and vehicle details before the trip begins.

The feature was piloted in the US and Latin America last month and is now being made available across the UK. Uber said the development process involved working closely with older adults and accessibility specialists to help address barriers faced by those less confident using mobile technology.

It follows a similar approach seen in the “teen accounts” introduced last year, where guardians can monitor journeys made by young users and ensure they are matched with more experienced drivers.

Andrew Brem, general manager of Uber UK, said the new tools focus on ease of use and safety, giving families added confidence when organising travel for older relatives.

Brem added: “These features are all about helping older adults stay independent and connected, while giving loved ones the confidence that Uber is there to help.”
