Uber secures five-year operating licence in Hartlepool
Updated: Dec 8, 2024
Hartlepool Borough Council has granted Uber Britannia Limited a five-year private hire operator’s licence. The decision was made during a recent meeting of the regulatory services committee.
Uber will base its operations at the Hartlepool Enterprise Centre on Brougham Terrace. The company’s ride-hailing service enables users to book private hire vehicles through a smartphone app.
The licensing committee approved the application under standard conditions. Uber representatives explained that the service employs app-based technology, with bookings and records managed through a cloud-based system rather than a traditional office setup. This approach aligns with Uber’s nationwide operations, which include over 80 licences across the UK.
Uber’s entry into Hartlepool adds another layer of competition to the town’s private hire market, offering residents additional transport options.
The global ride-hailing company has been expanding its footprint across the UK. In addition to its recent approval in Hartlepool, Uber holds private hire operator licences in major cities such as London, Manchester, Birmingham, Leeds, and Bristol. These licences are issued by local authorities, including Transport for London (TfL) in the capital.
